WS14: Systemic Methodologies and Tools to navigate complexity in Project Management

Workshop Abstract

Complexity is the characteristic of systems or situations that prevents the observer from predicting their behaviour or evolution while fully understanding the properties and behaviour of all individual elements and the relations among them. Another expression is that the system is greater than the sum of its parts. The cause of complexity is the ability of the individual system components (people or subsystems) to evaluate situations and make decisions. Complexity nowadays is a characteristic of every aspect of human organizations and entrepreneurship. As expected, it also appears in Project Management, and it is considered one of the most severe factors in not meeting the project’s success criteria. Systemic approaches deal with organized social or business systems in which complexity is an inherent property. Thus, Systems Thinking is a valuable means for (project) managers to address complexity issues. Systems Thinking is of particular importance in the latest (7th) version of PMBOK to “recognize, evaluate and respond to the dynamic circumstances within and surrounding the project”. While there is no cookbook approach to deal with complexity issues in any domain, the systems approach and specific systemic methodologies can contribute to a project manager’s effort to navigate complexity in the whole system that delivers value through a project.
